On 12 March 2026, the Faculty of Theology and Religion hosted its Hilary Term Research Event, bringing Faculty members together for discussion of Professor Paul S. Fiddes’ recent publication, Romans Through the Centuries.
In Romans Through the Centuries, Professor Fiddes offers a theological, literary, and cultural reading of the Apostle Paul’s letter to the Romans. The commentary approaches each passage through three related perspectives: the voice of the Apostle as the letter was dictated, the rich tradition of its interpretation through major historical epochs, and its influence on literature, visual art, and socio-political thought. By bringing close textual study into conversation with reception history, the book traces how Romans has been read, debated, and reimagined across different historical and cultural settings.
The event was chaired by Professor Mark Edwards. In addition, responses were offered by Dr Peter Groves and Dr Christine Joynes, whose reflections prompted sustained discussion on biblical interpretation, reception history, and the continuing significance of Romans in contemporary scholarship. Colleagues from across the Faculty contributed to the conversation, considering the book’s implications for research and teaching.
