We are pleased to announce that Professor John Barton, Emeritus Professor and former Oriel and Laing Professor of the Interpretation of Holy Scripture at the University of Oxford, has been elected as a member of Academia Europaea. This esteemed recognition honours his profound contributions to the field of biblical studies.
The Academia Europaea is a prestigious pan-European academy of sciences, humanities and letters. Membership draws on all countries in Europe, bringing together a truly international body of expertise.
The Academy is committed to furthering the advancement of academic excellence for public benefit and the sharing of knowledge through education for all ages. Its members, made up of both scientists and scholars, share a collective aim to promote learning, education and research.
Professor Barton held the Oriel and Laing Professorship from 1991 to 2014, during which time he became a leading figure in the study of the Bible, particularly in its interpretation and theological significance. Since 1973, he has also served as a priest in the Church of England, exemplifying a lifelong commitment to both scholarship and pastoral care. Professor Barton's recent books include A History of the Bible: The Book and its Faiths and The Word: On the Translation of the Bible.
Professor Barton commented: 'I'm very grateful to the European Academy for electing me as a Member. Theology and Biblical Studies aren't strongly represented in the Academy. My election shows that it does recognize these subjects as serious academic pursuits, alongside the other sciences and humanities.'
