Professor Luke Bretherton Speaks at Sheldonian Series on ‘Life’
14 February 2025
We are delighted that Reverend Canon Professor Luke Bretherton, Regius Professor of Moral and Pastoral Theology, contributed to the latest Sheldonian Series event, which explored the theme of ‘Life’.
Held on 11 February at the Sheldonian Theatre, the event brought together leading scholars to examine fundamental questions about human existence from planetary, technological, and ethical perspectives. Professor Bretherton’s talk focused on what it means to be human, how we live well with others, and the role of universities in fostering debate on moral and philosophical questions. Reflecting on the event, he emphasised the importance of discernment, peaceful argument, and the pursuit of truth in academic life.
The discussion culminated in a dynamic Q&A session, engaging staff, students, and alumni in debate about human purpose, artificial intelligence, and the search for life beyond Earth.
The Sheldonian Series, convened by the Vice-Chancellor, aims to foster open discussion on major global topics, with next term’s theme set to explore ‘Truth’.
