The Faculty of Theology and Religion is delighted to announce that Professor Phil Booth, Professor Celia Deane-Drummond and Professor Timothy Mawson have been awarded professorial titles by the University of Oxford as part of the 2026 Recognition of Distinction exercise.
This prestigious distinction recognises their significant and sustained academic contributions to the University and their achievements in their respective fields.
Professor Phil Booth has been awarded the title of 'A.G. Leventis Professor of Eastern Christian Studies'. His research focuses on ecclesiastical history and, in particular, the history of eastern Christianities in the eastern Roman Empire, the Sasanian Empire, and the caliphate from the fourth to the tenth centuries. Based at St Peter’s College, Professor Booth is also Director of the Oxford Centre for Late Antiquity.

The title of 'Professor of Contemporary Catholic Theology' has been awarded to Professor Celia Deane-Drummond, whose interdisciplinary scholarship brings theology into conversation with the natural sciences. Her research spans systematic and moral theology, ecology, anthropology, evolution, and environmental ethics. Professor Deane-Drummond is Senior Research Fellow in Theology at Campion Hall and Director of the Laudato Si’ Research Institute.

Professor Timothy Mawson has been recognised with the title of 'Professor of the Philosophy of Religion'. His research spans Philosophy of Religion, Philosophical Theology, and Value Theory, engaging with fundamental philosophical and theological questions, including the existence of God and the meaning of life. Professor Mawson is Edgar Jones Fellow and Tutor in Philosophy at St Peter’s College.
