Studied PPE and Theology at Trinity College, Oxford and Ludwig-Maximillians University, Munich. Stephenson Fellow at the Department of Biblical Studies, Sheffield University (1989-91). Lecturer in Systematic Theology, Ripon College Cuddesdon (from 1992). Vice-Principal from 2002. Reader in Modern Theology, University of Oxford, 2008-2015. Professor of the History of Modern Theology, University of Oxford, from 2015. Hensley Henson Lecturer, 2013. Canon Theologian, Truro Cathedral from 2016; Co-chair of Meissen Theological Conference from 2018.
